Cybercab vs. Tesla Robotaxi: What’s the Difference?

Cybercab is the dedicated vehicle
The official Cybercab FAQ describes a gold vehicle with butterfly doors, two seats and an interactive touchscreen. Tesla identifies Cybercab rides in limited areas of Austin as of our source check. This is a vehicle-specific availability statement.
When reading a Cybercab story, ask whether it concerns the vehicle’s design, manufacturing, passenger deployment or commercial sale. Those milestones answer different questions. A photograph of a vehicle at a display establishes very little about the commercial terms available to a prospective owner.
Robotaxi is the service riders book
Tesla’s Robotaxi support page explains how passengers request a ride through its app. The page identifies both Model Y and Cybercab in the fleet and says initial assignment depends on availability and group size.
That makes “I took a Tesla Robotaxi” a description of the service used. It does not identify the vehicle. Likewise, a headline announcing Robotaxi expansion needs a separate statement about which vehicles are operating. FSD (Supervised) is a different offering
On its FSD (Supervised) support page, Tesla states that currently enabled features require an attentive driver and do not make the vehicle autonomous. Features can vary with configuration, software and region.
A privately owned Model Y using FSD (Supervised) should therefore not be treated as equivalent to a vehicle operating in Tesla’s Robotaxi service. Shared branding or a familiar vehicle shape does not establish identical software, operating conditions or permission to carry passengers without a driver. Tesla’s consumer support page is not an owner-network participation agreement.
How to read the three terms in a headline
“Cybercab production increases” is a manufacturing claim. Look for evidence about factory output and distinguish that from customer deliveries.
“Tesla Robotaxi expands” is a service claim. Check the location, service boundaries, vehicle model and whether passengers can book.
“FSD (Supervised) receives an update” is a driver-assistance claim. Read the applicable release notes and supervision requirements; it does not by itself announce a driverless commercial service.

Why the distinction matters for prospective owners
CyberFleet Ready analysis: Buying a vehicle, gaining access to a ride network and running a viable local operation are separate parts of an ownership plan. Evidence for one should not stand in for evidence for all three.
For example, passenger availability in a city can help identify a market worth researching. It does not tell an outside owner what dispatch access, fees, insurance requirements or service responsibilities would apply. Similarly, a vehicle’s technical capability does not supply a contract or an earnings history.

The support pages reviewed explain the vehicles, rider experience and consumer supervision requirements. They do not provide a complete external-owner business agreement or establish that every personal Tesla can join the Robotaxi network. Treat any proposed participation terms as a separate document requiring review.
